Meet Shamber
I'm Shamber Garrett, a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia and a National Certified Counselor. I hold a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and an Education Specialist (EdS) degree in Community Care & Counseling: Traumatology. My advanced graduate education has provided specialized training in trauma-informed care, community mental health, and counseling.
Before becoming a counselor, I served in the United States Army and spent over 15 years in law enforcement. My husband also served in the military and worked in law enforcement, giving me a unique perspective on the challenges these professions can bring—not only for those who serve, but also for the spouses and families who support them.
Through my personal and professional experiences, I understand the demands of high-stress careers, the weight of responsibility, the difficulty of transitioning between professional and personal roles, and the impact these experiences can have on relationships, family life, and emotional well-being. I recognize that asking for support isn't always easy, particularly in professions where strength, independence, and resilience are often expected.
My background has shaped the way I approach counseling, emphasizing compassion, understanding, and the importance of creating a space where people can feel comfortable being themselves without judgment.
While I have a special appreciation for the experiences of military members, veterans, first responders, and their families, my practice welcomes teens and adults from all walks of life. I believe everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, and supported as they navigate life's challenges.
Outside of the counseling office, I call Chesapeake, Virginia, home, where I live with my husband, our daughter, and a number of furry friends who keep life interesting. Family is an important part of my life. I value the moments of connection, make life meaningful.
My goal is to meet you where you are, work collaboratively toward what matters most to you, and help you build a meaningful life that reflects your own values and goals.
